Ayurveda is effective in fighting obesity: Dr Shilpa Jain

Panchkula, December 1 : Obesity, termed as ‘Medh Rog’ in Ayurveda, is rapidly becoming a global health crisis and the root cause of numerous chronic ailments. From hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes to heart diseases, joint pains, hormonal imbalances, and fatty liver, obesity lays the foundation for serious health complications.

Dr Shilpa Jain, a renowned Ayurvedic physician with over 22 years of experience and the founder of Sanjivani Ayurvedic Research Centre, located in Sec 16, Panchkula, advocates for a natural and effective approach to weight management through Ayurveda.

“Obesity is not merely a cosmetic concern but a metabolic disorder deeply rooted in imbalances of the body’s doshas—Vaat, Pitta, and Kaff,” explained Dr Jain. “An increase in Kaff dosha, in particular, triggers weight gain, inactiveness, high cholesterol, and other health issues. Ayurveda offers time-tested solutions to address these imbalances holistically and sustainably,” she said. 

Dr Shilpa Jain was expressing her views in an online session on the subject of 'management and treatment of obesity in ayurveda'. 

She said that the treatment begins with a comprehensive Body Fat Analysis, assessing 13 critical health parameters, including BMI, muscle mass ratio, body water levels, and metabolic age. Based on the results, a personalized diet and yoga plan is designed to suit individual needs.

Dr Jain said further that a combination of key Ayurvedic therapies are used for managing and treating obesity. We conduct 'Panchakarma Therapy' which is a detoxification process to cleanse the body and restore balance. Udvartana Therapy is also employed; this includes a dry powder massage that targets fat cells, aiding in weight loss.”

She added that, 'Abhyang Swedan' which is a combination of oil massage and steam therapy to reduce Kaff dosha is employed under the treatment protocol. We also use Basti Karam under which administering medicated oils or herbal mixtures as an enema to detoxify and balance the doshas is undertaken.

“Through these therapies, coupled with customized diets and yoga routines, patients experience significant weight loss—between 5 to 12 kg per month—without any side effects,” noted Dr Jain.

Dr Jain highlighted that the body’s doshas play a critical role in overall health. She said, “While 'Kaff Dosha' leads to an imbalance that can lead to obesity, lethargy, and heart diseases; 'Vaat Dosha' is associated with joint pains, bloating, and stiffness. Another dosha - 'Pitta Dosha' can lead to indigestion, acidity, and hormonal imbalances.”

 “Our approach focuses on identifying and correcting these imbalances through proper assessment, including Nadi Parikshan (pulse diagnosis), and administering herbal medicines that are safe and effective,” she added.

As the world grapples with the obesity epidemic, Ayurveda offers a beacon of hope—a natural and sustainable way to fight obesity . “The best part is that in Ayurveda we use natural techniques to counter obesity and there is no need for the patient to undergo surgical fat removal,” concluded Dr Shilpa Jain.

Panchkula, December 1, 2024: The Amateur Golfers Society (AGS) a non-governmental organisation(NGO) organised the 6th edition of its prestigious golf tournament for amateurs– The Amateur Golfers Society Golf Tournament, at the Panchkula Golf Club(PGC). Anurag Rastogi (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Finance), Government of Haryana, was the chief guest, while guests of honour were Suresh Chandel, former MP from Himachal Pradesh and Sanjeev Goyal (IAAS), Director General Audit (Defence Accounts), Chandigarh. The tournament saw an impressive participation of 104 amateur golfers, many amateur women golfers also took part.

Winners in different handicap categories got trophies and special prizes. All the participants were given a goodie pack and participation score card. The golfers played all 18 holes in the 72-par course. Brig G J Singh won in the 0-9 handicap category. Brig R P S Rai won in the 10-15 handicap category with a score of 76. Col Gopi Singh with a score of 82 was the 1st runner up. With a score of 76 Sunil Katyal was adjudged the winner in the 16 & above handicap category. While, with a score of 79 each 

S K Goel and A P Singh were the combined 1st runners-up . In ladies the overall winners were Arushi Chawhan & Radhika Verma. The longest drive award was bagged by R K Meena (IPS).

Anurag Rastogi(IAS) congratulated AGS for organising the tournament and promoting the game. The PGC golf course is a beautiful place to play golf with such facilities and tournaments like these more people will get attracted to play the game.

Advocate (High Court) Suresh K. Gupta, Founder Trustee of the Amateur Golfers Society while talking to reporters said, “We have plans to create a state-of-the-art golf range at PGC for giving a fillip to the sport. We will then establish golf ranges in all districts of Haryana in 1 year. We want support from the Haryana government in this regard. We are also coming up with another tournament on 8 & 9 February 2025. What’s more, the AGS has finalised holding a tournament in Malaysia in collaboration with the Malaysian Government.”

Gupta also raised the issue of NHAI wanting to take over 2 acres of the golf course for building a road. I have requested Mr Chandel to get this sorted out.

Suresh Chandel said that he will meet Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and take up the issue with him so that a resolution is reached.

Luxe Estate which is coming up with The Sky Heights - Panchkula’s tallest ultra-luxury residential project supported the tournament. Build a Kinder World, One Paw at a Time!*-Tejaswini Gulati (Psychologist)

November : 13th marks the World Kindness Day, a global celebration dedicated to promoting acts of generosity and compassion. Kindness as a concept is integral to human nature and entails empathising with, sharing, and alleviating the pain and suffering of one another. While the occasion encourages us to practice kindness towards ourselves and others, one often overlooked yet significant deed is showing kindness to the voiceless of our country. The condition of community dogs of India, often subject to hunger, disease, and abuse, mirrors the grave depravity and critical importance of extending our service beyond our kin.

India is home to an estimated 60 to 70 million stray dogs, and yet, the choice for pedigree dogs as companions still remains perniciously popular. While individuals are entitled to their right to choose, this choice, however, is rooted in ignorance. It lacks necessary background checks and entirely disregards the abuse and extreme cruelty that the backyard breeding industry thrives on. Advocate and Animal Rights Activist Niharika Kashyap stated that countless unethical breeders force female dogs to breed more than twice a year, which in essence is rape, just to make more money. Additionally, the newborn puppies are separated from their mothers and are sold at an alarmingly young age.

The reality of stray dogs similarly paints a very grim picture. There is ample evidence available on Google search for dog rape cases in India which grossly falls short to represent the actual number of such incidents in our country. Our community dogs battle for survival throughout their lives amidst traffic, worsening weather conditions, toxic waste products, scarcity of food and water, and rampant animal cruelty. Furthermore, the perception of housing societies in India is increasingly inclining towards viewing them as nuisances rather than as living and breathing creatures capable of feeling physical and mental pain. This attitude further extends to rescuers who work tirelessly to feed, rescue, and rehabilitate abandoned dogs while exposing themselves to the dangers of being at the receiving end of threats and violence. Overall, the feeling of contempt for stray dogs is leading to growing indifference and being out of touch with human qualities such as kindness, compassion, and care.

Rescuing stray dogs isn’t just about easing their suffering; it‘s about creating a culture of kindness and responsibility that guarantees a positive societal impact. Developing empathy toward animals has previously been associated with increased pro-social behaviour and improved interpersonal relationships. In India, where community spirit thrives in the form of shared compassion, we have an opportunity to build and extend this sense of unity to protect the most vulnerable members of our society—our community dogs.

This World Kindness Day, let’s pledge not just to be kind, but to be agents of change for those who cannot speak for themselves. Let’s ask ourselves, how can we create a world where these beings no longer have to cower in fear? They don’t need grand gestures; they need heartfelt actions that affirm their worth- a bowl of food, a warm space, and a touch that tells them they belong.

Royal Kennel Club Panchkula Hosts International Dog Show, Welcoming Chief Guest to Celebrate Global Canine Excellence

Panchkula –The Royal Kennel Club Panchkula, in proud affiliation with the Kennel Club of India and in collaboration with the Pet Animal Husbandry Medical Centre (PAMC), welcomes dog lovers and exhibitors to its highly anticipated International Dog Show on November 17, 2024.

The grand event will take place at the Sector 3 Show Ground, opposite the Holiday Inn in Panchkula. General Secretary of the Royal Kennel Club, Panchkula, Sikander Singh has personally overseen the management of the event. This year marks the fifth consecutive dog show by the Panchkula Kennel Club, with the last two events backed by popular demand through this successful partnership with PAMC.

One of North India’s largest canine events, this year’s show is expected to host 300–400 dogs from various breeds and pedigrees, including native Indian breeds, highlighting both international and homegrown talent.
