In most cases of piles, surgery is not required: Dr Harsh Kumar Aggarwal

Says in case surgery is needed, most patients get discharged within 4 hours of it

Says video proctoscopy has revolutionised the diagnosis of piles

Dr Harsh Kumar Aggarwal, a distinguished name in the field of general surgery and founder of Tarini’s Healthcare, a Centre of Excellence in Sec 40 C, Chandigarh feels that in most cases of piles, surgery is not required. He added that even if surgery is needed most patients are discharged within four hours after surgery. He also said that diagnosis of piles has become easier with video proctoscopy revolutionising the same.

Dr Harsh who also was a Chief Surgeon at Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali, said, “In my 25 years of practice, I have treated over 2,00,000 patients, with only 10 per cent requiring surgery. Most pile patients can be managed effectively with non-surgical approaches, which are both less invasive and highly effective.” Dr Aggarwal, has been at the forefront of advanced treatments for piles and circumcision for over two decades.

With an impressive track record of more than 18,000 successful surgeries for piles and over 5,000 circumcision procedures, Dr Harsh has established himself as a leading expert in his field. His expertise extends across all modern forms of treatment for piles, including Doppler, Laser, Stapler, Harmonic, Infrared Coagulation, Sclerotherapy, and Banding.

Dr Harsh said that contrary to popular belief, surgery is not always necessary for treating piles. With proper diet and lifestyle modifications, most patients can avoid the need for surgical intervention, said Dr Harsh , who is committed to patient-centered care, focusing on the least invasive and most effective treatment.

Dr Harsh said that uncomplicated piles typically present as painless bleeding during bowel movements. In more advanced cases, patients may experience a mass protruding from the rectum, pain, and itching. Bleeding is the most common symptom. Piles are located about 6 cm above the anus. So a proctoscopic examination is necessary for diagnosis. A proctoscope is a hollow tube attached to a camera, allowing the doctor to see the piles. Dr Aggarwal said: “Video proctoscopy provides a recorded visual of the condition and has revolutionised diagnosis of piles.”

Dr Harsh added, “Unfortunately, many patients feel embarrassed to seek proper medical help and instead rely on over-the-counter medications, leading to prolonged suffering and delays in appropriate treatment.”

When asked about surgical options for piles, he said that there are several surgical options available. In the past, conventional piles surgery was painful. However, we now have painless methods like Doppler-guided surgery, stapler procedures, and laser treatments, he added.

In reply to a question, he said: “There is no single best treatment for piles. The most suitable method varies depending on the patient’s age, bleeding, associated medical conditions, anaesthesia risk, and whether the patient has had previous piles surgery. A combination of the newer procedures, which are painless and cost-effective, often works best.”

Dr Harsh further said that surgery is considered when medical therapy fails, bleeding persists, or anaemia develops, requiring blood transfusions. However, most cases can be managed with medications, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications, he said.

According to Dr Harsh , most patients are discharged within four hours after surgery and can resume daily activities immediately without assistance. They can return to work after about a week, with all symptoms typically resolving completely within three weeks.

In addition to his work with piles, Dr Harsh Kumar Aggarwal has also performed over 5,000 circumcision procedures, including the latest stapler circumcisions, which offer reduced recovery times and enhanced precision.

Shalby Hospital Mohali Pioneers Non-Surgical Rezum Therapy for Prostate Treatment in North India

Chandigarh — August 27, 2024:
Shalby Hospital Mohali has introduced North India’s first Rezum Therapy, a ground breaking, non-surgical treatment for an enlarged prostate, providing new hope for patients suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This innovative procedure, now available in India, was announced by Dr. Priyadarshi Ranjan, a renowned urologist and the Director of Urology Services at Shalby Hospital.

Dr. Ranjan, who is also the founder of the Prostate Excellence Center in Chandigarh, described Rezum Therapy as a quick, outpatient procedure that uses water vapor to treat prostate enlargement, offering a modern alternative to the conventional Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). TURP, a standard surgical method for prostate treatment, often requires a hospital stay of two to three days and results in post-treatment complications such as severe pain and a loss of sexual function.

“With Rezum Therapy, we are introducing a revolutionary shift in the treatment of prostate enlargement,” said Dr. Priyadarshi Ranjan during a press conference. “This therapy is designed to offer patients a minimally invasive solution that dramatically reduces both the physical and emotional strain traditionally associated with prostate treatment. Unlike the conventional TURP procedure, which typically involves significant recovery time, multiple days of hospitalization, and considerable postoperative discomfort, Rezum Therapy allows us to provide effective treatment in a fraction of the time. It is a 10-minute outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia, and patients are usually discharged within just two to four hours. The therapy involves using steam injections to dissolve the excess prostate tissue, which is then naturally absorbed by the body over a period of a few weeks.”

Dr. Ranjan elaborated on the patient benefits of Rezum Therapy, emphasizing its impact on quality of life: “What truly sets this procedure apart is the preservation of sexual function, specifically ejaculation. In traditional prostate surgeries like TURP, the risk of retrograde ejaculation is significant, which can lead to a permanent loss of ejaculation.

This can be distressing for younger patients or those who are still sexually active. With Rezum Therapy, we can treat the prostate while preserving ejaculation, making it an ideal option for men who wish to maintain their sexual health. For the first time, patients can receive treatment for an enlarged prostate without having to choose between their health and their quality of life.”

He continued, “In terms of effectiveness, Rezum Therapy boasts an impressive success rate of over 80%. The results can be life-changing for patients who have suffered from urinary retention and other symptoms related to an enlarged prostate. Most patients begin to see improvements as early as two weeks post-procedure, and the full benefits are typically experienced within three months.

Additionally, this therapy is suitable for a wide range of patients, including those with varying sizes of prostate glands. It offers an advanced solution to address the discomfort, inconvenience, and complications associated with BPH, allowing patients to return to their normal routines far sooner than with traditional surgical methods.”

Rezum Therapy has garnered significant international attention for its efficacy and patient-centered approach, and Shalby Hospital Mohali is proud to be the first in North India to offer this cutting-edge technology. The procedure is priced at approximately Rs 2.5 lakh, comparable to TURP, but with faster recovery and reduced risk of side effects.

“With this revolutionary technology now available at Shalby Hospital Mohali, we are empowering men with a safer, less invasive option for prostate care,” Dr. Ranjan concluded. “Our goal is to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from BPH while maintaining their overall well-being, and we are thrilled to be at the forefront of this medical advancement in India.”
